The emergent intensity from the cloud tops of Venus were measured by the Venera 9 orbiter along five paths on the illuminated disc. These radiance distributions at 3500A contain information on the vertical and horizontal structure of the clouds and explicitly show the effects of the small and large scale ultraviolet markings. Model calculations with a Mie phase function for sulfuric acid aerosols indicate that the clouds have a layered structure. The best agreement is obtained with a conservative scattering top layer of optical thickness 2, and a lower layer composed of a mixture of H2SO4 and large approximately (10 microns) absorbing particles.
