A value for the recurrence period of classical nova outbursts of about 100,000 yr is obtained from the space densities of white dwarfs and novae in our Galaxy. This is compared with the recurrence period of about 30 yr of known recurrent novae, and it is concluded that two classes of galactic novae exist: those with main-sequence companions and long recurrence periods, and those with red giants and short recurrence periods. The properties of the two classes are examined and compared with those of dwarf novae. The basis of the Kukarkin-Parenego relation is examined.
