The secular motion of the earth's pole is discussed on the basis of latitude observations carried out by the International Latitude Service. The secular motion of the mean pole in the period from 1955.9 to 1973.9 is calculated using the (x, y) polar coordinates published by the Bureau Internationale de l'Heure and by the International Polar Motion Services. The results obtained with both series of coordinates are found to correspond fairly well, and it is concluded that this confirms beyond any doubt that the earth's rotational axis has a real secular motion. Possible explanations of the observed motion are considered, including a combination of plate tectonic motion and slow movements of the earth's axis of rotation.
