The present work minimizes the guaranteed estimate of the error in the determination of the scalar parameter of the orbit in measuring the angles between directions from the spacecraft toward nonspecified reference points on the surface of a planet and toward known stars. Formulas are derived which are necessary for the computer-solution of the problem using linear programming and multidimensional random search. Numerical results are presented for an extended near-earth orbit of Molniya-1 type and for a two-parameter family of almost-circular near-earth orbits.
