A new method which uses visible and near-infrared spectroscopic data to determine the abundance ratios in the atmospheres of the outer planets is described. Conditions for selecting couples of two lines or bands of two different species are explained; by measuring the abundance ratio directly from the ratio of the absorption coefficients of these two lines, effects of scattering processes are excluded. The results, which are contrasted with those indicated by the reflected-layer model, do not support the likelihood of enrichment of deuterium and carbon with respect to hydrogen in the Jovian atmosphere (the assumed composition of the primordial nebula is taken as standard). The high C/N ratio might indicate that nitrogen is trapped in condensed compounds below the N/H cloud.
