A successful search for ultraviolet O III Bowen emission lines in HZ Her is reported. The observed ratios of Bowen line strengths in HZ Her are compared with those seen in gaseous nebulae. The detection of UV Bowen emission lines in the spectrum of HZ Her is taken as proof that the Bowen fluorescence mechanism is responsible for the 4640-A emission complex previously observed in the spectra of most optical counterparts of X-ray sources.
