The effective field of Babcock's star, HD 215441, has been measured as a function of phase using a photoelectric Balmer-line Zeeman analyzer. The effective and mean surface field curves can be simultaneously fitted in an approximate manner with a decentered dipole magnetic field distribution having the field axis at 30 to 35 deg to the rotation axis. It is shown that the 'symmetric rotator' model (a combination of dipole and quadrupole fields having reflection symmetry or anti-symmetry through the stellar equatorial plane) proposed by Krause and Oetken (1976) as an alternative to the 'oblique rotator' does not give an acceptable description of the field of HD 215441.
