The distribution of Bautz-Morgan types is estimated by means of a Monte Carlo simulation of cluster luminosity functions, and this simulation is compared with simulations based on the luminosity functions of Geller and Peebles (1976) and of Schechter (1976). It is shown that neither function can simultaneously predict three known properties of Bautz-Morgan types, and it is suggested that the statistical model, regardless of the form of the luminosity function, cannot perform the prediction. The alternative, a 'special process' model, is considered to be more advantageous.
