It is demonstrated that positional error boxes of X-ray sources can be determined by using a numerically simple estimation method based on the statistical approach that regards the source position as an unknown but fixed entity. A general description of the proposed method is given, and the calculation of error boxes for scanning X-ray telescopes is explained. The case of rotating modulation collimators (RMCs) is considered, and it is shown in particular how a single RMC observation can be set up to yield two lines of position simultaneously. A simple case of circular error boxes is employed to illustrate the reliability of the method. The applicability of this method to single and multiple observations with the modulation collimator aboard HEAO-A is briefly discussed.
