Previous absolute-magnitude calibrations of the beta index of H-beta photometry for spectral types A1 and earlier are reviewed together with previous absolute-magnitude calibrations of MK classifications for spectral types from O5 to B8. Mean absolute magnitudes and standard deviations are computed from beta indices and calibrations of MK classifications for samples consisting of 457 stars of spectral type B5 and earlier, 451 stars of type A0 and earlier, and various stars in open clusters for which more than 10 stars have been observed. Comparisons of the results indicate very large dispersions in all cases, even after allowance is made for effects of binary systems in the open clusters. An attempt is made to explain the reasons for the dispersions, and it is concluded that the dispersion for cluster stars may have been underestimated in comparison with that for field stars.
