The acceleration mechanisms for ultra-high energy cosmic rays (at least 10 to the 20th eV) are discussed in relation to the problem of the sources. No one-step mechanism among those which have been studied in detail seems to be capable of accelerating particles to these energies. On the other hand, multistep mechanisms are subjected to size constraints which make it unlikely that these sources are located within the Galaxy. Photomeson production losses, however, confine the sources to the neighborhood of our Galaxy, and the most likely candidate which satisfies the size constraints and the energy requirements appears to be Cen A.
