The authors have obtained short wavelength, low dispersion IUE spectra of an interacting galaxy, NGC 2798, and a classic merging galaxy, NGC 3256. Both of these are unusually luminous infrared galaxies detected by IRAS. Absorption features due to Si IV and C IV are the most prominent features of these spectra. The authors place the UV observations in the context of their infrared observations of these two galaxies and interpret the results in terms of the "starbursts vs. monsters" controversy for the underlying energy source powering luminous infrared galaxies.
