It is suggested that the nebular emission in symbiotic stars need not originate around the hot compact object, but that it may be formed close to the cool star due to the radiative action of the hot star. The model is based on IUE observations between 1979 and 1986 of the periodically variable symbiotic star HBV 475. However, its implications extend beyond this individual object. An outbreak of a symbiotic star may be due to a rapid increase in the stellar wind from the cool star.
