The preliminary results of an investigation of the morphology of the Mg II resonance lines in K and early M giants are presented. Winds of high (≥50 km/sec) velocity are quite common in K giants, particularly of MK Class IIIa, but rare in M giants. In one confirmed case (γ Phe; K5 III) and another probable case (σ Pup; K5 III), the simultaneous presence of C IV emission and a cool, high-velocity wind imply the existence in normal giants of the 'hybrid-atmosphere' phenomenon first recognized in G and K bright giants and supergiants.
