The 1985 microfiche edition of the low-dispersion IUE spectra has been searched for emission in the Mg II h,k resonance lines of peculiar A-type stars (Ap, Am, λ Boo). All published spectra show the Mg II h,k lines in absorption. The absence of emission is confirmed by comparison with 53 high-dispersion spectra available from the IUE archives. Moreover, high-dispersion spectra reveal no sign of a chromosphere for three Ap stars for which weak X-ray emission has been reported.
