It is shown that the square-root laws that occur in many problems of multiple-scattering theory and that have long seemed puzzling admit of a straightforward probabilistic interpretation. It is demonstrated that the square root of the direct photon-escape probability that occurs in various problems of line-radiation transfer comes about through a combination of half-space geometry and the longest-flight approximation (LFA). In effect this represents the half-space version of the Rybicki-Hummer (1982) LFA.
