Initial results of an X-ray monitoring program of the bright QSO MR2251-178 are presented. The observations were carried out using the Channel Multiplier Array (CMA) detector of EXOSAT between October and December 1983. All but one of the nine observations were short with a typical exposure time of 5000 s, and the CMA was operated using a thin Lexan filter. Count rates for the observations were calculated by correcting the total counts from a box about 3 arcmin square using the count rate from a nearby source and an irregularly free region for a background. Spectra from individual detectors of the medium-energy experiment (ME) were derived from slew data from before and after each observation, and fits were made to the ME spectra from each observation in an energy range corresponding to 1.5-10 keV. Evidence is presented for a substantial column of material-absorbing radiation at energies between 1-2 keV. The absorption was found to be variable on time scales of about 1, as was the underlying course luminosity in the 2-6 keV band. Some possible reasons for the variability are discussed.
