The observed sequence of overtone, double-mode, and fundamental pulsations in Population I and II Cepheids is described in terms of the beautifully simple behavior (bifurcations) of the nonresonant amplitude equations for the lowest two modes. Double-mode behavior, when it occurs, does so naturally to the left of the fundamental blue edge; this double-mode behavior is not a transient mode switch, but has a constant modal content. The connection with numerical hydrodynamic computations and with observations is discussed.
