Observational data on the LMC, the SMC, and the Magellanic Stream (MS) are summarized, and theoretical models developed to explain their evolution are reviewed. Topics discussed include: the large gas clouds surrounding and linking the SMC and LMC; the discovery that the SMC comprises two components which are moving apart at relative velocity 40 km/s; the hypothesis that the LMC has disrupted the SMC by tidal interaction; and the tidal, primordial, and turbulent-wake models of interaction between the Clouds and the Galaxy, producing the MS. Photographs, radial-velocity and neutral-hydrogen maps, and diagrams are provided.
