The author presents an analysis of the form of the optical continuum spectrum of SS 433 based on continuum-fitting a subset of spectrophotometric observations obtained during the two years 1982 - 1983. The dominant source of optical luminosity in SS 433 resembles a hot blackbody with a radius of ≡30 R_sun; and a mean color temperature of ≡32,500K. The continuum spectrum appears hotter when the more luminous precessing body is seen nearest pole-on and cooler when seen nearest equator-on. The temperature variation is large enough to account for the amplitude and form of the 164 day V-band light curve. Gravity-darkening of an early-type companion star or an accretion disk may provide the most likely interpretation of the color temperature variation.
