The fact stressed by Netzer (1985) that the broad line region seems to emit more energy than it receives from the UV and X-ray continuum has been interpreted by him as due to an intrinsic reddening. It is shown here that photoionization models lead to ratios Lα/Hβ and Fe II optical/Hβ in disagreement with the observed values when they are corrected for this reddening. The discrepancy is solved only assuming that the reddening is small and that the low ionization lines are emitted in a medium heated by a non radiative mechanism or by an additional X-ray continuum created and absorbed "on the spot". The Compton heating induced by the central source is indeed unable to provide the missing energy.
