Using the existing data on 12CO line observations and the far-infrared (FIR) data from the Infrared Astronomy Satellite, the authors study the correlations between the FIR luminosity and the mass of gas in spiral galaxies. It is shown that there is an almost linear relationship between the two quantities. The authors also find a correlation between the absolute face-on integrated blue magnitude and the gas content of the galaxies. Taking the FIR luminosity as a measure of the current star formation activity and the blue luminosity as a measure of the total mass of the galaxy, it is concluded that not only is the current star forming activity constant per unit gas mass, but also that the ratio of mass in the form of gas to the total mass, for spiral galaxies, is a constant to within a factor of ≡3.
