Analysis of the U, B, V surface-brightness distribution across M31 spiral arm S4 shows that peak brightness is reached near the inner edge. In fact, as indicated by a photometric profile along the M31 major axis, arms 3, 4, 5 all display a marked asymmetry, with their surface-brightness maximum shifted toward their inner edges. Arms 6, 7 have peak intensity along their midlines. The results obtained are consistent with the predictions of density-wave theory.
