The ISOPHOT detection of dust in emission (Popescu & Tuffs 2003) beyond the truncation radius of a spiral galaxy disk raises the question of what is the effect of this dust on the radial distribution of light in the optical and near-infrared bands. Based on radiative transfer calculations, we show that the dust beyond the main optical disk of galaxies can produce a measurable signal of scattered light.
