VLF observations at the Sogra-Kerguelen conjugate points are examined. It is shown that the probability of the occurrence of chorus and hiss bursts on the earth surface is associated with the location of the projection of the plasmapause and the main ionospheric trough (MIT). The MIT is found to play a large role in channeling VLF waves from the magnetosphere to the earth surface. The channeling of choruses is effected by the polar edge of the trough, while the channeling of ELF hiss is effected (in quiet and moderately disturbed periods) by the equatorial edge. During intense magnetic disturbances, hiss can be channeled toward the earth by both edges of the MIT.
