A stationary one-dimensional diffusion model with allowance for circulation is used to assess seasonal variations of the vertical turbulence coefficient in the lower thermosphere by matching calculated seasonal variations of thermospheric temperature and composition (O, O2, and N2) with data of the semiempirical MSIS model; calculations are performed for 30 deg N in the 90-500 km altitude range. It is shown that in order to match calculations with model results it is necessary to assume that turbulence intensity increases from summer to winter. It is confirmed that seasonal variations of turbulence and circulation may be responsible for semiannual variations of the composition of the upper atmosphere.
