It is pointed out that conceptually there are few distinctions between aperture synthesis interferometry at radio, infrared, or optical wavelengths, and the experience and software developed in the radio domain should be largely applicable to the optical case. Coherence time is a vital consideration for radio and optical cases. Radio VLBI practice requires use of phase closure and amplitude closure relations; this may be the case for optical interferometric systems as well. This means that the optical aperture synthesis interferometer will consists of many elements. In the near term (10 to 20 yr) there will be orbiting devices; if a manned lunar base is established, an optical equivalent of the VLA might be constructed and operated on the Moon.
