Five generically-different approaches to a high resolution, high sensitivity space telescope covering the options of focal and afocal collectors, filled apertures and dilute apertures and one-dimensional and two-dimensional arrays are described. These concepts are compared, given equal collecting area and equal observing time, on the basis of angular resolution and sensitivity to faint point sources and extended sources in the presence of photon statistics, zodical background light, and other sources in the field. Technology development issues involved in the realization of advanced telescopes are listed.
