Using multiaperture optical and infrared magnitudes of 164 spirals in nearby galaxy clusters, the authors explore the utility of the spiral color-magnitude relation as an accurate distance indicator. In combination with H I line widths, they find there to be a well-defined relationship between the observed (B-H)-0.5 color of spirals and their observed 20% line width. However, it is shown that the spiral color-magnitude relation may be impossible to calibrate due to the lack of a well-defined zero point. Therefore the B-H, H relation cannot be considered as an accurate distance indicator. Finally, the authors compare the H I content of these cluster spirals to the Local Supercluster sample. They can find no evidence that any of the cluster spirals that have been used in establishing the IR Tully-Fisher distance scale are H I deficient with respect to field spirals.
