Abundance, Hydroxyl Emission, Molecular Clouds, T Tauri Stars, Taurus Constellation, Line Spectra, Molecular Spectra, Northern Hemisphere

Ground-state OH line observations of large molecular clouds in the Taurus region are presented, where the main lines are measured over an area of 180 square degrees and the satellite lines are determined at 17 selected positions. Two cloud complexes can be distinguished on basis of the radial velocities. Complex A, at 110 pc distance, has a size of 30 x 25 sq pc and a mass of about 15,000 solar mass. The excitation temperatures of the main lines are almost equal, at least at positions with a high apparent optical depth. The mean densities in the clouds are a few hundred H2 molecules per cu cm. The velocities vary irregularly within complex A. Complex B (distance 300 pc) with a size of 70 x 12 sq pc and a mass of 40,000 solar mass shows a large velocity gradient in the direction of its longest dimension. There is a weak correlation between the distribution of the T Tauri stars and some properties (OH optical depth, CO temperature) of the molecular clouds.
