Spectroscopic observations show that there is a compact emission region with Seyfert-like characteristics at the position of the bright nucleus of the galaxy NGC 1808. There is an extended, very bright emission line complex which is ionized by hot stars and rotates with the galaxy. This complex has no obvious genetical connection with the Seyfert-like nucleus. The existence of a dust pattern extending from the nucleus outside the plane of the galaxy, somewhat reminiscent of the filaments observed in M 92, is confirmed.
