The vertical structure of spiral galaxies shows a wide variety of distributions. Especially the distribution of the neutral hydrogen gas in these disks is thick and lagging. These disks are also often warped in their outer parts. This thesis investigates the vertical distribution of matter in three galaxies in detail and six in a more global manner. By analyzing observations of the ionized hydrogen in the sp[iral galaxy NGC 891 we show that, besides the neutral hydrogen, also the ionized hydrogen is lagging. It is also shown that this galaxy has a large vertical dust component. The dwarf galaxy UGC 1281 is analyzed in ionized hydrogen as well as neutral hydrogen. In this galaxy the vertical ditribution of the ionized gas is limited. However, there is a clear vertically extended component in the neutral hydrogen. The distribution of this neutral hydrogen can be explained by either a lagging halo as a warp. The galaxy NGC 7814 does not show a vertical component in its neutral hydrogen. However, in the center of this galaxy there is gas that rotates at extremely high speeds. This gas does contain a vertical extension. These 3 galaxies are investigated with another 3 galaxies to look for correlations between the overall appearance of a galaxy and its vertical distribution.
