NASA's Universe Education Forum staff have worked with a team of E/PO mission leads to design, develop, pilot, evaluate, modify, and disseminate a ``short course" that immerses teachers in learning about two key themes from the National Science Education Standards: origin and evolution of the universe, and the unifying concept of models, evidence, and explanation in science. In 2005 the Forum partnered with scientists, educational researchers and the producers of A Private Universe to leverage the work on this ``Modeling the Universe" (MTU) course into the production of Beyond the Solar System, a professional development DVD for national dissemination in 2006 and beyond. This session will illustrate how the designs of both the MTU course materials and the DVD respond to the research on student and teacher learning.
