Giotto's flight past Comet Halley is reviewed, and the mission's findings are briefly discussed. The first encounter with a dust particle, the detection of the comet's central bright spot, the increasing rate of impact by dust particles which threatened to blind the camera, and then the end of the mission at 1350 km from the nucleus are retold. The black color of the nucleus is discussed, and it is suggested that a mantle of nonvolatile debris covers the cometary surface, protecting the underlying ice and leading to outgassing and dust jetting from only a small part of the surface. This jetting probably caused the end of the mission.
