The Widefield Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) is a MIDEX currently scheduled for launch in 2009 which will survey the entire sky in 4 mid-infrared bands from 3 to 23 microns with vastly greater sensitivity than previous all-sky surveys at these wavelengths. We will present the properties of the WISE atlas in the context of searches for distant, luminous, dust-enshrouded galaxies, and show the quality and size of the map of the Universe that will result, including the range of colors and types of galaxies and AGN that will be detected, based on the complementary wavelength and depth coverage obtained from Spitzer surveys. The WISE survey will provide the benchmark of targets for future and planned observatory missions, including SOFIA, Herschel, JWST and SAFIR, and to assist interpretation of future surveys ASTRO-F and Planck Surveyor. The WISE extragalactic catalog will highlight the most extreme and massive regions of the Universe at moderate redshifts, and thus provide the most direct challenges to galaxy formation models.
