A novel approach to the control of the flow past a terrestrial telescope is explored in water tunnel experiments. Instead of a conventional enclosure around the instrument to decelerate the wind, only a bluff body just downstream of the telescope is proposed. A central issue is the separation of the ground plane boundary layer induced by the bluff body. In these tests, streams of dye were injected near the ground plane of the bluff body, a flat plate perpendicular to the ground plane. As a function of the gap between the bluff body and the ground plane, the maximum growth of the upstream boundary layer was measured. The results demonstrate that for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers only modest gaps are necessary to prevent undesirable boundary layer separation, so that the telescope need not be mounted very high to rest above the boundary layer air.
