The effect of the avoided crossing of the O3 (1 1B2) state, which is reached by absorption in the Hartley band, is noted to be an alternative source for the heavy CO2 enhancement in the stratosphere that is commonly believed to be a consequence of heavy O3 enhancement. It is suggested that the two sources could be of equal importance, if the heavy O3 enhancement is of the order of 22.5 percent. It is not apparent that there could be another path to isotopic fractionation through termolecular association, if the O3 distribution among its internal modes is statistical.
