The authors have mapped the 350-μm emission along the major axis of the dusty galaxy NGC 253 and find this to have an extent of about 95 arcsec. The total mass of interstellar material in the central kpc is ≡3×108M_sun;. Comparison of the results with CO observations suggests that the interstellar material in NGC 253 is in the form of massive clouds, similar to those in our Galaxy.
