The Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) is an ambitious all-sky spectroscopic survey to measure radial velocities and stellar atmosphere parameters (temperature, metallicity, surface gravity) of up to one million stars using the 6dF multi-object spectrograph on the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope of the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO). The basic atmospheric parameters (Teff, gravity, [M/H], [alpha/Fe], Vrot.sin i, micro-turbulence) and radial velocities are derived for some hundred HD stars from high S/N, multi-epoch RAVE spectra, using χ2 techniques against the synthetic spectral library of Munari et al. (2005). The HD stars are well distributed over the whole HR diagram, and some are in common with the Geneva-Copenhagen survey by Nordstrom et al. (2004). The potential of RAVE spectra for measuring basic stellar parameters is derived and discussed. A detailed comparison is carried out between the atmospheric parameters as derived spectroscopically in the RAVE wavelength range (8400-8800 Å) and as calibrated in literature from combined spectroscopy in the classical blue range (3900-4900 Å) and multi-band photometry. The two temperature and gravity scales are essentially identical. An excellent agreement is also found with the Nordstrom et al. (2004) radial velocities.
