The Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) is an ambitious all-sky spectroscopic survey to measure radial velocities and stellar atmosphere parameters (temperature, metallicity, surface gravity) of up to one million stars using the 6dF multi-object spectrograph on the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope of the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO). RAVE will provide a giant leap forward in our understanding of our own Milky Way galaxy, providing a vast stellar kinematic database larger than any other survey proposed for this coming decade. It is a multinational endeavour involving scientists from 10 countries. The pilot program started in spring of 2003 and was completed in July of 2005. It delivered spectra in the Ca-triplet region (8410-8790 Å) for more than 70000 southern hemisphere stars in the magnitude range 9 < I < 12 at a resolution of R=10000. The radial velocities measured in this survey are accurate to a few kilometers per second. We will present the survey motivation, design and the verification of data gathered during the pilot phase.
