Bram Ochsendorf (Leiden Observatory, Netherlands) requests AAVSO observers to monitor the RCB variable V854 Cen April through August 2012 in order to detect a fading of this star so they may observe it with the Xshooter instrument on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Paranal Observatory, La Silla, Chile. Ochsendorf and Dr. A.G.G.M. Tielens write: "As part of our studies on the the role of molecules in space, we are studying the molecular inventory and the formation and evolution of these molecules in their birth sites, such as the R CrB stars." V854 Cen is visual magnitude ~7.2 at maximum, and according to observations in the AAVSO International Database, is at that magnitude as of 2012 April 4. Nightly observations (V preferred, visual and all bands welcome) are requested, with more frequent coverage if the star begins to fade. Observations should be reported nightly to the AAVSO (http://www.aavso.org/WebObs), and immediately if V854 Cen is seen to fade to magnitude 8.0 or fainter. Charts are available from http://www.aavso.org/vsp. V854 Cen coordinates: RA 14 34 49.41 Dec -39 33 19.2 (2000.0).
