Sunspots: Solar Activity Cycles, Sunspot Groups

Scientific paper

Based on the data of the sunspots observed at Yunnan Observatory, the sunspot groups at high latitudes (over 40°) during the solar cycles 19, 20, 21, and 22, and the rising period of the solar cycle 23 have been collected statistically. The results show that if sunspots at high latitudes are found to dominate in one hemisphere (the northern or southern) in a solar cycle, then the authors can predict that solar activities will dominate in this hemisphere for the entire cycle. According to this finding, the dominance of solar activity in the southern hemisphere will continue during the coming cycle 23.
