It is well known that nonlinearities in the observed galaxy power spectrum seriously complicate comparison to linear perturbation theory. Monge-Ampère-Kantorovich reconstruction (MAK) is a method to rewind the clock of the universe, enabling a measurement of the linear power spectrum from an observed nonlinear density field. We investigate the effectiveness of MAK to recover the linear power spectrum on evolved cosmological N-body simulations. Nonlinearities are completely erased as one goes back in time; in fact power is suppressed too much because MAK assumes particle trajectories are cleaner than they actually are. We apply MAK to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey New York University Value-Added Galaxy Catalog to demonstrate that the linear power spectrum can be recovered up to k ≲ 1\ h Mpc-1.
