Scientific paper

The paper examines and compares three basic models of electric-field generation at the boundary of the magnetosphere, based on the quasi-viscous interaction, magnetic-field diffusion, and the Petcheck reconnection mechanism. It is shown that the reconnection leads to high values of the electric field in the vicinity of the frontal point and to a stronger IMF dependence of the morning-evening potential difference. On the sides of the magnetosphere, however, the potential difference is significantly affected by the quasi-viscous interaction based on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability.
