New paleomagnetic data are presented on the Pliocene Trubi marls in the Punta di Maiata section in Sicily, which complete the integrated magnetostratigraphy (planctonic foramineferal) biostratigraphy and cyclostratigraphy of the Rossello composite section, initiated by Hilgen (1987). The complete section provides a high-quality Mediterranean global reference section for the Early to early Late Pliocene. The data make it possible to diffferentiate between the ages of the last common occurrence (estimated to be 3.72 Ma) and the actual last occurrence of Globorotalia margaritae (3.59). The age of 3.59 Ma also gives an accurate age for the Zanclean-Piacenzian boundary, provided the last occurrence of G. margaritae is maintained as a criterion to define this boundary in the Mediterranean.
