Recent discoveries have indicated that very slight changes in the magnitude of any of the fundamental forces or constants would disallow the existence of such familiar material structures as atoms, stars, and life. Examples of such effects are surveyed, concentrating on those involving the universe's primary macroscopic structures, main-sequence stars. Improper applications of the 'anthropic principle' are discussed, followed by an examination of serious weaknesses in the considerations and paradigms most commonly advanced to explain the fortuitous values of the constants, e.g., explanations by alternate sets of constant, multiple universes, and the 'participatory anthropic principle'. Finally, the often-ignored inference that the universe may be an artifact of extra-universal intelligence is examined.
