P Cygni's position in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (HRD) close to the Humphreys-Davidson limit poses the interesting question of its evolutionary history. If its original mass on the main sequence (M0) was less than about 50 M_sun; the star has most probably gone through a red supergiant (RSG) stage in the past and much of its present circumstellar (CS) matter would be the remnant of mass loss in the RSG phase or while it moved across the HRD to the left. Alternatively, if M0 > 50 M_sun; then the star may never have been a RSG and its CS material would be the result of heavy mass loss during repeated crossings of the Humphreys-Davidson limit. It is the purpose of this paper to review the observational evidence for these scenarios.
