Scientific paper

Features of the volcanic plumes on Io observed by Voyager 1 such as the
umbrella shape, the filamentary structure and the abrupt bends of the
filaments, are explained based on a gas dynamic analysis. An analytic
solution of the flow field between the shock and the plume top is given.
