The Astro-1 mission is scheduled to be launched in March 1986 for an effective duration of 7 days, specifically chosen to overlap two spacecraft encounters with Halley's comet. These have been tentatively identified as Vega-2 (on 9 March) and Giotto (on 13/14 March). The Astro-1 payload will be launched by the Space Shuttle and observations carried out by the Shuttle crew under the direction of instrument Principal Investigators and comet scientists on the ground.
