Searches are described for Ca II H and K absorption in the spectra of seven QSOs shining through the outer parts of 12 galaxies at projected distances of 9-200 (100/Hzero) kpc from their centers. No Ca II was found with 2 sigma equivalent width limits ranging from Wlambda(K) = 57 to 240 mA. The results are analyzed along with previously reported observations of Ca II in the spectra of QSOs, supernovae, and other extragalactic sources. In terms of the diameter D(0)25 at B = 25 mag per sq arcsec, it is found that Ca II is detectable out to an angular distance of about 0.6-1.4D(0)25 from the center of a galaxy, or a projected distance of about 8-18(100/Hzero) kpc. If the projected distance for the luminosity of the galaxy is normalized, as done in the interpretation of Mg II absorption lines in QSOs, Ca II is observable out to 0.5-1.4 times the distance of Mg II. Since Mg II should be much easier to find than Ca II, it is concluded that galaxies must have sharp cutoffs in both Mg II and Ca II at similar radii, or the extent of Mg II must be greater at the more recent epochs corresponding to the Ca II observations.
